First awards from new South London Maritime Trust Fund

A new fund for young people’s maritime education and support has made its first grants available to three organisations for South London children and young adults.

Set up in 2024, The Ray Perkins Trust trustees are pleased to have made three awards to established river-based youth organisations, one from the Borough of Wandsworth and two others from the Borough of Lambeth.

Endorsed by Admiral Lord West, First Sea Lord from 2002 to 2006. He said: “This new trust is a splendid opportunity to assist voluntary organisations looking for access to waterborne activities and I heartily approve of the benefactor’s wish to help young people getting to know about the sea and ships.”

The closing date for applications for the next round of grants at the end of 2025 will have a cutoff date of 30th September.

To avoid disappointment, the level of any awards will be in the range of £500–£5000 and to help as many as possible, awards may not match the level aspired to. It is solely at the discretion of the trustees to evaluate the merits of any applications and make awards based on this alone. Individual canvassing may disqualify potential recipients.

Applications can be submitted online at www.rayperkinstrust.org.uk

Notes to editors:

  • Ray Perkins was a lifelong supporter of all things to do with boating and the sea. He was a Sea Scouts Leader for much of his adult life.
  • In his will, he left a bequest to be used to help young people living in the Boroughs of Lambeth and Wandsworth to gain and improve maritime skills.
